Learning the Craft: My Floristry Training Experience
The course was held just outside Cambridge in a beautiful, light-filled studio space. It was led by three incredibly talented florists, each with different backgrounds and styles. Hearing how they had transitioned into floristry from other careers gave me the confidence to believe I could do the same. Everyone on the course had different goals-some were hobbyists, others future business owners-but we all shared the same nerves on day one. By the end of the week, we were swapping ideas, sharing laughs, and encouraging each other on our new floral journeys. What We Learned: A Week in Flowers
🌸 Day One: Hand-Tied Bouquets
We started with the basics-hand-tied bouquets. Learning the spiral technique took a bit of practice (and a few dropped stems), but by the end of the day, I was confidently wrapping bouquets and creating aqua packs to keep flowers fresh during delivery. We also discussed pricing, which was a huge help for those of us planning to set up our own floristry businesses. This day gave me the skills I need to develop my own bouquet recipes.🌿 Day Two: Wreath Making
With the festive season approaching, wreath-making felt perfectly timed. We built moss bases, added evergreen foliage, and decorated with dried flowers and natural accents. This day really taught me how much craftsmanship and planning goes into even the simplest designs.💐 Day Three: Funeral Flowers
This was a more emotional day as we focused on funeral arrangements. We explored a variety of styles, from coffin sprays to posies and sheaves. We also discussed how to work sensitively with grieving families and funeral directors-an essential part of being a compassionate local florist.🏢 Day Four: Business & Corporate Work
This day was all about the business side of floristry. We covered how to structure your services, price your work, and explore opportunities like local markets, subscription flowers, or partnering with venues. I left feeling inspired and full of ideas for launching my own florist business in Colchester.💍 Day Five: Wedding Flowers
On the final day, we focused on wedding work-a personal favourite of mine. We created bridal bouquets with satin ribbon, learned how to wire delicate buttonholes, and worked with stunning open roses we'd been watching bloom all week. The whole day felt like the perfect finale to an inspiring course.Launching My Floristry Business in Colchester
