Hand-Crafted Holidays: How to Make Your Own Christmas Wreath in 8 Minutes
Hello and welcome to the blog! I'm Megan, and I run Megan Daisy Floral Design based here in Colchester, Essex. With the festive season fast approaching, there is nothing I love more than the scent of fresh pine and the pride of hanging a handmade wreath on the front door. I know wreath-making can look a bit intimidating if you've never tried it, but I promise it's much simpler than it looks! I've put together a quick step-by-step guide based on my latest tutorial to help you create a professional, lush wreath at home.

What You'll Need

Before we dive in, let's get our "ingredients" ready. For a classic, textured look, I recommend a mix of:
  • Evergreen Foliage: I love using Spruce for a sturdy base and Pistache for a different green tone.
  • Textured Greens: Eucalyptus (both large and small leaf varieties) adds a beautiful, modern scent and movement.
  • A Mossed Ring: You can buy these pre-mossed, which I find much easier for home crafting.
  • The Basics: Reel wire or twine, florist wire, and a pair of sharp secateurs.
  • Decorations: Pine cones, cinnamon sticks, and a beautiful wire-edged ribbon.

Step 1: Prep Your Foliage

The secret to a neat wreath is in the prep. You want to cut your foliage into pieces that are roughly the size of your hand. Pro Tip: Always strip the bottom inch of the leaves off to create a "clean stem". This makes it so much easier to secure your bundles to the ring without them slipping out.

Step 2: The Bundling Technique

We don't attach stems one by one; instead, we create little "mini-bouquets" or bundles.
  1. Secure your twine: Tie it firmly to your moss ring.
  2. Make a bundle: Take a mix of your spruce, pistache, and eucalyptus.
  3. Attach: Place your first bundle on the outside edge of the ring and wrap the twine around the stems tightly-give it a good tug!
  4. Alternate: Place your next bundle toward the inner edge, overlapping the stems of the previous one. By alternating "out" and "in" on a diagonal, you'll get a full, bushy wreath that covers the moss completely.

Step 3: Adding the "Interest"

Once your ring is a beautiful circle of green, it's time for the festive bits! I like to use wired pine cones and cinnamon sticks. Instead of poking the wire straight into the moss (where it can wobble), try to hook your wire under the twine you used to build the foliage. This keeps everything stable and ensures your decorations won't fall off when the wind catches your front door!

Step 4: The Perfect Bow

To finish, I always go for a wire-edged ribbon. The wire hidden in the seam allows you to "fluff" the bow so it stays looking perfect all December long. Simply create a loop, pinch the center, and wire it into the top of your wreath.
